DIY Berkey Water Filter
Here are the instructions on how to build your own DIY Berkey Water Filter System!
You will need:
2 5 gallon food grade buckets
2 lids that fit the buckets
A pair of Black Berkey Filter elements (these are the most important, I got mine off of eBay for around $99)
1 Food grade spigot
Step one
Drill four ½ inch holes in the buckets
2 holes in the bottom of the upper bucket and 2 holes in the lid of the lower bucket
Step Two
Drill a ¾ inch hole into the side of the lower bucket near the bottom. This is where you will attach the spigot so make sure the spigot will go.
Step Three
Attach the spigot to the lower bucket and put the lid that has 2 holes on the bucket
Step Four
Install the Berkey Filter elements into the upper bucket through the holes in the bottom
Step Five
Assemble the filter by setting the upper bucket onto the lower bucket
Make sure the line up the holes on the bottom of the upper bucket to the holes on the lid of the bottom bucket so that the tubes extend into the lower bucket.

Not only will this keep a constant supply of filtered water at hand but the Berkey Water filter elements also work best when the pressure of water is constant on them. This is a great way to make a name brand water filter that isn’t cost prohibitive. With this water filter you will never need to worry about the quality of the water coming out. Also make sure you order some extra elements when you get a chance. This will help you if your filters get old or used up.
